DETROIT (AP) — Tragically, a second individual has passed away due to a shooting incident that occurred at a popular tailgating area following a Detroit Lions game, according to police reports on Monday.
The conflict erupted around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at Eastern Market, a well-known outdoor gathering place. This came shortly after the Tampa Bay team claimed victory over the Lions at Ford Field with a score of 20-16, as stated by Police Chief James White.
“I don’t have all the specifics on what happened, but it’s always heartbreaking when someone loses their life,” commented Lions coach Dan Campbell on Monday.
The altercation intensified when one individual drew a gun and fired at least two shots. Law enforcement officers who were nearby quickly responded, apprehending the alleged gunman and seizing two handguns from the scene, according to Chief White.
“Combining tailgating with alcohol and firearms is a dangerous mix,” White told journalists on Sunday.
The victims, both from Detroit, were reported to be a man in his 40s and another in his 20s. A suspect, who is from Oak Park, is currently in police custody.
Chief White explained that the confrontation began as a larger fight, which briefly broke up before reigniting. “They gathered again just a few feet away from where the first fight started,” he explained. “The two individuals squared off, raising their hands as if to prepare for another fight. … That’s when one man from Oak Park pulled out a gun and fired at least twice.”
