Salim Hoss, Former Lebanese Prime Minister, Passes Away at 94

BEIRUT (AP) — Salim Hoss, who served as Lebanon’s Prime Minister five times during some of the country’s most challenging periods, died on Sunday at the age of 94, as announced by the current Prime Minister.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised Hoss, a former government minister and member of parliament, calling him the “conscience of Lebanon.” Mikati noted that Hoss died at a particularly difficult time when the country desperately needs strong leadership and moral guidance.

Mikati’s remarks come amid concerns that Lebanon could become embroiled in a broader conflict with Israel. Following the start of the war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has launched attacks against Israel. Since then, there have been almost daily exchanges of fire, resulting in the displacement of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.

According to Mikati, Hoss was a distinguished economist and set an example with his ethical approach and extensive knowledge. “He consistently prioritized the nation’s interests and the well-being of its citizens above all else,” he stated.

Hoss was often recognized as a technocrat and enjoyed respect as a rare statesman in a nation often marked by political and sectarian strife.

Political Career During Turbulent Times

Throughout Lebanon’s 15-year civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 1990, Hoss served as Prime Minister for four terms. His last term in office was from 1998 to 2000.

At one point, Hoss led one of two rival governments that emerged after President Amin Gemayel’s term ended in 1988 without a successor. This resulted in a division, with Michel Naim Aoun leading one government in Christian east Beirut, while Hoss led another in Muslim west Beirut.

By tradition, the Prime Minister of Lebanon is a Sunni Muslim, the President is a Maronite Christian, and the Speaker of Parliament is a Shiite Muslim.
