MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Ed Sheeran, the renowned British pop singer and a lifelong fan of Ipswich Town, has expressed his apologies to Ruben Amorim after unintentionally disrupting the new Manchester United head coach during a live interview.
The incident occurred on Sunday while Amorim was speaking to Sky Sports about United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich. As Amorim was addressing the camera, Sheeran approached analyst Jamie Redknapp for a quick greeting, prompting a brief pause in the interview. Redknapp then invited Sheeran to join them after the segment.
Sheeran, who is a minority owner of Ipswich Town, was caught on camera celebrating after Omari Hutchinson scored an equalizing goal during the match at Portman Road. This marked the first game for Amorim after his appointment at Manchester United, which began with an exciting moment as Marcus Rashford scored within just two minutes. The match ended in a draw after a deflected shot found the back of the net.
On Monday, Sheeran took to his Instagram story to address the situation, stating, “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realize he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie.”
Additionally, Redknapp shared images on his own Instagram account featuring Sheeran alongside analysts Roy Keane and Izzy Christiansen, as well as the presenter Kelly Cates, all of whom were part of the Sky Sports studio team.
In a recent revelation, Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton noted that Sheeran played a pivotal role in helping the club secure a new player during the offseason, taking part in a Zoom call just before heading on stage for a performance with Taylor Swift.
