BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Argentine prosecutors announced on Thursday that three individuals have been formally charged in relation to the tragic death of Liam Payne, a former member of the popular music group One Direction. Payne passed away after falling from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in the upscale Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires last month.
Prosecutor Andrés Madrea has charged the three suspects—whose names have not been disclosed—with “abandonment of a person followed by death” and “supplying and facilitating the use of narcotics.” Madrea has requested their arrest, which was granted by judge Laura Bruniard, who has placed restrictions that prevent the suspects from leaving the country while the investigation continues.
In the aftermath of the incident, investigators revealed that Payne was alone at the time of the fall. However, it has now come to light that one of the charged individuals frequently accompanied the singer during his stay in Buenos Aires. The second suspect is a hotel staff member accused of providing Payne with cocaine, while the third is identified as a drug dealer. The drug-related charges resemble investigations in the United States concerning similar high-profile cases, such as that of “Friends” actor Matthew Perry.
Following Liam Payne’s autopsy, officials reported that he had suffered multiple injuries and significant external bleeding. Toxicology tests indicated the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in his system at the time of death. Further forensic evidence, including cell phone records and eyewitness testimonies, is being gathered to strengthen the case. Authorities are currently working to retrieve data from Payne’s damaged personal computer and other seized devices.
Notably, the autopsy concluded that Payne’s injuries were not the result of self-harm or external assault, suggesting he might have been unconscious during the fall. Prosecutors have also dismissed the possibility of suicide.
Payne was in Argentina to attend his former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert on October 2. He had documented his trip on Snapchat, sharing videos of himself dancing with his girlfriend, American influencer Kate Cassidy, in the audience. While Cassidy returned after the concert, Payne chose to extend his stay.
One Direction, which went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, achieved remarkable success during its run. Following the band’s break, each member, including Payne, pursued individual solo careers.
