After waiting for 36 years, “Beetlejuice” has made a triumphant return in the sequel aptly titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” earning an impressive $110 million during its opening weekend.
This much-anticipated sequel, directed by Tim Burton, achieved the third-highest box office opening weekend of the year, only surpassed by hits like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
In this film, Michael Keaton reprises his role as the mischievous ghost Beetlejuice, while Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder return as Delia and Lydia Deetz. The story also introduces Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. The cast includes notable actors like Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
The sequel has now become the second-highest grossing movie released in September, only falling short of 2017’s “It,” which had a staggering opening of $123 million. In comparison, the 2019 film “It Chapter 2” debuted with $91 million.
When the original “Beetlejuice” came out in 1988, it made just $8 million in its first weekend, without adjusting for inflation. However, it went on to earn $77 million, establishing itself as a beloved cult classic.
This exciting opening weekend signals a lively start to the fall movie season, especially after a quiet Labor Day weekend and a slow August where many new releases struggled and established films continued to dominate the box office.
