LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has achieved an impressive milestone by maintaining the top spot at the North American box office for three consecutive weekends. This sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 horror comedy has garnered $26 million in ticket sales, as reported by studio estimates on Sunday.
The film, featuring original stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, has collected over $226 million domestically in just three weeks. Its successful run began with a remarkable opening weekend of $110 million, making it the third highest opening of the year, followed by a strong second weekend of $51.6 million.
In a close second place was the animated release “Transformers: One,” which debuted with $25 million. This film tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and includes voice performances from Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Scarlett Johansson.
Taking third place in the box office was the horror film “Speak No Evil,” starring James McAvoy, which earned $5.9 million in its second week, bringing its total to $21.5 million.
This weekend’s box office showed a generally subdued atmosphere, a trend anticipated to change with the upcoming release of “Joker: Folie à Deux” on October 4. Meanwhile, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year’s second-highest grosser, remained among the top five with an additional $3.9 million in its ninth weekend, now totaling $627 million. The only film to surpass it this year is Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
Making waves at the Cannes Film Festival, the body horror movie “The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat and starring Demi Moore, debuted in sixth place, earning $3.1 million from limited screenings in its opening weekend.
The Daily Wire film “Am I Racist?” featuring conservative columnist Matt Walsh going undercover as a “DEI trainee,” also stayed within the top ten after a fourth place finish last week, bringing in $2.9 million for seventh place and achieving a total of $9 million over two weeks.
