Beyond the Sunny Season: ‘Brat’ Crowned Collins Dictionary’s Word of the Year

LONDON (AP) — Collins Dictionary has selected “brat” as its word of the year for 2024, inspired by the title of a highly successful album that has become emblematic of a carefree summer lifestyle.

The term, made popular by singer Charli XCX for her sixth studio album, is described as “marked by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” Its usage in the phrase “brat summer” has propelled it into the spotlight as “one of the most discussed words of 2024,” according to Collins lexicographers.

Collins experts compile an annual list of emerging words by analyzing their extensive 20-billion-word database, ensuring they capture the dynamic essence of the English language. This year’s list reflects various trends and cultural shifts.

Other noteworthy contenders for the word of the year include “era,” reflecting a significant phase in one’s life or career, inspired by Taylor Swift’s global Eras tour. Another finalist is “anti-tourism,” which highlights the increasing pushback against mass tourism, alongside “delulu,” referring to unrealistic or misguided beliefs and expectations. Additionally, “rawdogging” has emerged, defined as taking a long-haul flight without any electronic devices or distractions.

Collins managing director Alex Beecroft remarked, “With many of this year’s significant words being popularized by generations Z and Alpha, we can confidently say this is the most ‘brat’ Word of the Year list ever.”

Last year’s word of the year was “AI,” an acronym for artificial intelligence, reflecting the growing impact of technology in our daily lives.
