Carson Palmer, the former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, is set to take the helm as the new head coach at Santa Margarita High School, his former school.
This announcement was made by Santa Margarita on their social media platforms on Friday. The high school is a Catholic institution situated in Rancho Santa Margarita, an affluent suburb in southern Orange County.
Palmer had a remarkable career at Santa Margarita in the late 1990s, achieving a record of 32 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie as the starting quarterback, and he led the team to consecutive CIF Southern Section championships. Last year, he made a return to the school, offering informal assistance, especially since his son, Fletch, plays as a quarterback in the class of 2028.
After his successful high school career, Palmer moved on to the University of Southern California (USC), where he played for four seasons and secured the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 2002 under the guidance of Coach Pete Carroll.
Palmer was selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Over the course of 15 seasons, he played for the Bengals, the Oakland Raiders, and the Arizona Cardinals, where he notably led the team to the NFC Championship game in January 2016.
Now approaching 45 years old later this month, Palmer retired from professional football in January 2018, and he is excited to return to his roots as a coach.
