SAN ANTONIO (AP) — On Tuesday, Shohei Ohtani underwent arthroscopic surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder, an injury he sustained during Game 2 of the World Series against the New York Yankees on October 26. The procedure was conducted by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who serves as the head physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ohtani, who is renowned for his dual-threat capabilities, hurt his nonthrowing shoulder while attempting to steal second base, which ultimately led to a shoulder dislocation. Despite the setback, he managed to return for the next three games, contributing to the Dodgers’ victory over the Yankees in five games to claim the championship.
According to the Dodgers, the talented Japanese player is anticipated to participate in spring training come February. His presence in the lineup is invaluable, especially considering he had an extraordinary regular season, becoming the first player in history to achieve at least 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a single year.
Ohtani’s performance in the World Series, however, was not as stellar; he recorded just 1 hit in 11 at-bats, along with one walk. Nevertheless, his impact on the team throughout the season was profound, as the Dodgers heavily relied on his production.
Last year, he signed a remarkable 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers. This raises questions regarding his projected return as a pitcher in 2025, particularly since he had undergone surgery on his throwing elbow last offseason, which sidelined him from pitching in 2024.
The Dodgers will start their spring training in early February, ahead of most other teams, as they are set to face the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series on March 18 and 19.
