ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top football recruit, has switched his commitment from LSU to Michigan, according to a source familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Earlier this month, Underwood and his family were seen wearing LSU memorabilia during a game in Baton Rouge, where Alabama defeated the Tigers 42-13. However, Underwood has decided to remain close to home, committing to the Wolverines just 15 miles from his high school, Belleville High School.
Underwood announced his decision through a pinned post on his Instagram, referencing an article from On3.com that confirmed his commitment to Michigan.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 205 pounds, Underwood has long been regarded as a premium talent in college football. Even though he had pledged to LSU a year ago, Michigan’s coaching staff, particularly head coach Sherrone Moore, actively pursued him with support from a name, image, and likeness (NIL) collective.
In the realm of NIL deals, an athlete of Underwood’s caliber can expect offers ranging from $5 million to $10 million. Michigan has partnered with Champions Circle, a collective focused on creating opportunities for athletes to profit from their talents, which played a significant role in bringing Underwood to the Wolverines.
“We are very excited to keep Bryce home in Michigan as he continues to build his legacy,” said Nate Forbes, a founding member and chairman of Champions Circle, in a statement celebrating the commitment.
Underwood’s decision injects a dose of optimism into the Wolverines’ season as they defend their national champion status. Currently holding a record of 5-5 (3-4 Big Ten), Michigan must secure a victory against Northwestern (4-6, 2-5) this Saturday to qualify for postseason bowl eligibility, followed by a challenging matchup against their second-ranked rival, Ohio State, to close out the season.
