CLEVELAND (AP) — Jim Donovan, the cherished radio play-by-play voice of the Cleveland Browns and a television sports commentator for over 40 years, passed away on Saturday at the age of 68.
A memorable figure in Cleveland sports, Donovan had been the voice behind the Browns since the team’s rebirth in 1999 following its expansion. Earlier this year, he made the difficult decision to retire from broadcasting to focus on his health as he battled cancer. Prior to the current season, he stepped back from his game-day responsibilities with the team.
Jim Donovan was adored for his passion and professionalism, winning the hearts of Cleveland fans with his humor and dedication. A meticulous planner, he invested extensive hours in preparing for game broadcasts, ensuring that each presentation was engaging and polished.
“Today is an exceptionally hard day for all of us, including the entire Cleveland Browns organization,” stated Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. “Jim’s influence as the Voice of the Browns over the past 25 years is beyond measure. Every Sunday, he connected with our fans through his deep love for the team and his exceptional talent.”
The Haslams continued, “While he will be profoundly missed, Jim has established a legacy that will endure for generations. His love for this city was only rivaled by his devotion to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Meghan, and all those lucky enough to have known him as family or friend.”
Known affectionately as “Jimmy,” Donovan originated from Boston and made Cleveland his home in 1985. Throughout his career, he not only covered the city’s three major sports teams but also participated in various national broadcasts, including NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
In August, Donovan announced his step back from his position, expressing heartfelt gratitude to Browns fans in a touching letter. He remarked, “For 25 years, I have had the honor of calling Browns games. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel proud to be ‘The Voice of the Browns.’ Cheryl, Meghan, and I are deeply thankful for your love, support, and prayers during the challenging times. It feels like having a vast family surrounding us, and that is what makes the Cleveland Browns truly special.”
Recognized for his significant contributions, Donovan was recently inducted into the Browns’ Legends Club and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, though he was unable to attend the ceremonies due to his illness.
In 2000, Donovan was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011. Last fall, he took a break from his role as sports director at WKYC-TV to receive treatment for leukemia but managed to return in time to commentate on the Browns’ late-season playoff run.
