Mahomes Shines with 3 Touchdowns; Hunt Seals Victory in OT as Chiefs Edge Buccaneers 30-24

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — In a thrilling matchup on Monday night, the Kansas City Chiefs maintained their unbeaten record as they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-24. Chiefs coach Andy Reid observed the Buccaneers driving down the field in the game’s final minute, where Baker Mayfield’s touchdown pass put Tampa Bay just a two-point conversion away from potentially handing the Chiefs their first loss of the season.

Despite contemplating a two-point conversion, Bucs coach Todd Bowles ultimately decided to kick the extra point, sending the game into overtime. “I’m glad he didn’t,” Reid remarked with a grin, clearly relieved at the decision.

The Chiefs won the crucial coin toss at the start of overtime, and Patrick Mahomes, who delivered an outstanding performance with 291 passing yards and three touchdowns despite nursing a sore ankle, executed a flawless drive, completing all five of his passes. Kareem Hunt capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, sealing the victory for Kansas City.

The Chiefs’ victory extended their winning streak to 14 games, which is the longest streak since the Carolina Panthers started 14-0 in 2014. This game also marked a significant achievement for Kansas City, making them only the sixth Super Bowl champion to start the following season with an 8-0 record. Additionally, they have now won their last eight games after trailing in the second half, including playoffs.

The Buccaneers had their opportunity to take control when Mayfield connected with Ryan Miller for a touchdown with just 27 seconds remaining. However, instead of going for a win with a two-point conversion, Bowles opted for the extra point, a decision that would ultimately result in the team’s fourth loss in five games. “We’ve got guys who are not going to quit fighting to the end,” Tampa Bay wide receiver Sterling Shepard stated after the game. “I’m really proud of the group and the way everybody fought. We just have to clean up some little things—that’s what this league is all about.”

In a moment of personal triumph, Bucs’ Rachaad White celebrated a touchdown in Arrowhead Stadium, a dream he had since growing up just ten minutes away. Having faced many challenges along his football journey, White marked his first scoring run in the second quarter, giving Tampa Bay a brief lead. Eyewitnesses, including his family, were left thrilled, and he humorously mentioned he lost count of how many of them were present.

In his first home game as a Chief, DeAndre Hopkins showcased his abilities, making eight receptions for 86 yards and scoring two touchdowns. One of his impressive plays included a remarkable catch that set up his own touchdown, celebrated with a dance inspired by the movie “Remember the Titans.” “That’s one of my favorite movies,” he said, highlighting his excitement in scoring for Kansas City.

Tampa Bay started the second half strong with two consecutive scoring drives, including a touchdown pass to Cade Otton, lifting the Bucs to a 17-10 lead, thanks to Chase McLaughlin’s successful 47-yard field goal. However, the Chiefs responded effectively in the fourth quarter. Mahomes led a 70-yard drive, tying the game with his touchdown pass to Samaje Perine. Despite suffering a slight ankle injury as he fell awkwardly, he remained in the game and later threw the go-ahead touchdown to Hopkins.

Following a three-and-out from the Buccaneers once the Chiefs took the lead, Mayfield expertly moved his team down the field again, resulting in a touchdown pass to Miller, setting the stage for overtime. Ultimately, Tampa Bay’s choice to eschew the two-point conversion proved to be a bitter decision in retrospect.

Injuries

Buccaneers: LB Yaya Diaby (chest) briefly exited the game, while CB Josh Hayes (calf) dealt with cramps during the second half.

Chiefs: WR Mecole Hardman (shoulder) and DE George Karlaftis (hip) sustained injuries but were able to return to the game.
