SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — On Wednesday, Matt Chapman, a highly regarded third baseman known for his exceptional defensive skills, reached an agreement with the San Francisco Giants on a six-year contract worth $151 million for the 2025-2030 seasons. By signing this contract, he has chosen to forego the opportunity to become a free agent at the end of this season.
As part of his new deal, Chapman will receive a signing bonus of $1 million, which will be paid on January 15. In addition, he will earn $25 million each year during the contract’s duration. This agreement guarantees that he will receive a total of $169 million over seven years, spanning the seasons from 2024 to 2030.
Chapman joined the Giants earlier this year in March, signing a contract that ensured he would earn $54 million over the next three seasons. That contract also included options for him to opt out after the 2024 and 2025 seasons. It featured a $2 million signing bonus and a $16 million salary for the 2024 season.
So far this season, Chapman is batting .247 and leads the Giants with 22 home runs, 69 runs batted in (RBIs), 90 runs scored, and 33 doubles. At 31 years old, he is a four-time Gold Glove winner, recognized for his outstanding defensive play, and he holds a career batting average of .241, along with 177 homers and 495 RBIs throughout his time with the Oakland Athletics (2017-2021), the Toronto Blue Jays (2022-2023), and now the Giants.
He was also selected as an All-Star in 2019, highlighting his talent and contributions to the game.
