Maya Rudolph earns her sixth career Emmy, while Angela Bassett wins her first at the Creative Arts Emmys.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Maya Rudolph celebrated her sixth Emmy win on Saturday night, receiving the award for Best Character Voice-Over for her role as the Hormone Monstress in the animated series “Big Mouth.” This recognition took place during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Angela Bassett also made headlines by winning her first Emmy for narrating the National Geographic documentary series “Queens.”

Rudolph, known for her work on “Saturday Night Live,” is nominated for three additional Emmys this year. She has already won four Emmys for her work on “Big Mouth.” “I’m really proud to be a part of this show,” she shared. “It humanizes being human.” She became emotional as she expressed her gratitude for having the opportunity to pursue a career she loves.

“It’s making me cry because I’m very menopausal,” she humorously added.

This award ceremony is the first of two nights dedicated to the Creative Arts Emmys, which recognize outstanding behind-the-scenes achievements in television and serve as a precursor to the main Emmys event. The main ceremony will be hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy and will air at 8 p.m. EST on September 15 on ABC.

When Angela Bassett collected her award for Best Narrator, she expressed her excitement, saying, “Oh my god, wow, my first Emmy. I couldn’t be more thrilled and more grateful.” She was drawn to the wildlife documentary because it was produced entirely by a female team, which is quite rare in the industry. “It just touched my heart,” she explained backstage, prompting her decision to participate.

Bassett, who has been nominated for Oscars twice and received an honorary Academy Award earlier this year, was among the notable winners at the ceremony. Pat Sajak, who recently retired, won Best Game Show Host for his final season on “Wheel of Fortune,” marking his fourth win in this category and his first since 1998.

“Saturday Night Live” excelled in the craft categories, securing six wins, including those for makeup and production design.

Rudolph had previously won two Emmys during her time as a cast member of “SNL” and is nominated again for her hosting efforts last season, with those awards being announced on Sunday. She will return this fall to portray Vice President Kamala Harris as part of the show’s 50th season, just before the upcoming election. “I feel like I am connected somehow to an incredible time in this country and an excitement that I haven’t felt in a long time,” she remarked backstage on Saturday.

In addition, she is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the Apple TV+ show “Loot,” but she is considered a longshot for the award, with Jean Smart for “Hacks” and Ayo Edebiri for “The Bear” being the leading contenders. “The Bear” leads all comedies this year with a remarkable 23 nominations.

The Ron Howard-directed documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” won four awards, while “Welcome to Wrexham” took home three, including Best Unstructured Reality Show. The reality show “Shark Tank” won the award for Best Structured Reality Show. In a crossover win, the Oscars telecast received four Emmys, including Best Live Variety Special.

In a heartwarming moment, Dick Van Dyke, who turns 99 next month, captivated the audience when “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years Of Magic” won Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special. He did a little dance and humorously remarked, “that hurt” afterward. While winners were being played off the stage, he jokingly invited everyone to his memorial, saying, “I don’t have a date yet, but I’m not feeling very well.” Earlier this year, Van Dyke made history by becoming the oldest person to receive a daytime Emmy for his appearance on “Days of Our Lives.”

The season’s leading nominee, “Shogun,” achieved a win when the team that created its post-show featurette received an Emmy. The FX series has a total of 25 Emmy nominations, with 17 of those being announced on Sunday during the scripted television segment of the ceremony. Many big names are also in the running for Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, including Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, along with Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling.
