Michigan and Ohio State Hit with $100,000 Fines Following Postgame Brawl

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten Conference has imposed a $100,000 fine on both Michigan and Ohio State for breaching the conference’s sportsmanship policy due to a post-game altercation following the Wolverines’ 13-10 victory on Saturday in Columbus.

The Big Ten criticized the actions of both teams, stating in a Sunday announcement, “Not only did these actions breach essential values of sportsmanship, like respect and civility, but they also put the safety of players and bystanders at risk.”

After the game, tensions escalated at midfield when Michigan players attempted to plant their flag on Ohio State’s logo, leading to a confrontation with Buckeyes players. This erupted into a physical brawl that required police intervention.

Officers used pepper spray to disperse the fighting players, who were seen exchanging punches and shoving each other. During the chaos, one police officer sustained a head injury while attempting to separate the players; he was later taken to a hospital but has since been released, according to a union official.

As the confrontation intensified, Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer took hold of the Wolverines’ flag and tore it from its pole, further escalating the situation toward the Michigan bench.

In response to the incident, Ohio State released a statement: “We respect the Big Ten Conference’s decision in this matter. The events that occurred after the game were unfortunate. Good sportsmanship is a core value at Ohio State, and we will review and enhance our post-game protocols to guarantee the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff.”

Meanwhile, Ohio State police reported that officers from both Ohio and Michigan had employed pepper spray to help control the situation. Following the incident, Michigan players were observed rubbing their eyes after exposure to the irritant.

Michigan’s head coach, Sherrone Moore, acknowledged that both teams could have responded differently, stating, “Emotions ran high on both sides. Rivalry games naturally get intense, especially this one; it’s considered the biggest rivalry in the country, so we need to manage it better.”

A spokesperson from the Michigan athletic department clarified that there would be no further comments beyond what was shared by the team following the game. This altercation was one of several that occurred in rivalry games nationwide that Saturday, highlighting the heated emotions often associated with such matchups.
