November’s Unprecedented Milestone: Mount Fuji Lacks Its Renowned Snowcap After 130 Years

TOKYO (AP) — In a striking development, Japan’s renowned Mount Fuji, famous for its snow-covered peak during this season, remains devoid of snow this November for the first time in 130 years. This unusual phenomenon is largely attributed to the unseasonably warm temperatures experienced in recent weeks.

The bare summit of Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as recorded on Tuesday, has broken the previous record of snow absence set on October 26, 2016, as noted by meteorological officials. Typically, the snow begins to grace the mountain’s peak around October 2, following the conclusion of the summer hiking season. Last year, snowfall was recorded on October 5, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

This year’s warm conditions have sparked discussion on social media platforms, with many users sharing images of the snowless mountain. Reactions have ranged from surprise to alarm, with some users expressing concerns about climate change and its impact on iconic natural landmarks.

The Kofu Local Meteorological Office, part of the JMA, which marked the first snowfall on Mount Fuji back in 1894, attributes this year’s lack of snow to the unusually warm October. The average temperature at the summit in October typically hovers around minus 2 Celsius (28.4 Fahrenheit). However, this year’s average was a remarkable 1.6 Celsius (34.9 Fahrenheit), making it the highest temperature recorded since 1932.

This year, Japan is experiencing not just a mild autumn but also a notably hot summer. Mount Fuji, referred to as “Fujisan,” stands as a national symbol and has historically drawn pilgrims. Its picturesque, symmetrical slopes topped with snow have inspired countless artworks, including renowned pieces by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, who created the celebrated series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.”

Today, this majestic mountain remains a popular destination for hikers who venture to the summit to witness breathtaking sunrises. Unfortunately, the increase in visitors has led to issues such as litter left behind and overcrowding, prompting urgent calls for environmental protection and measures to tackle overtourism.
