Return of the Crown of Thorns: A Sacred Offering at Notre Dame Cathedral

PARIS (AP) — After being safeguarded from the devastating fire that engulfed Notre Dame in 2019, a cherished Christian relic known as the “Crown of Thorns” is making its way back to its sacred home. This momentous occasion marks a significant step in the restoration of the iconic cathedral.

The Crown of Thorns, a circular arrangement of branches housed within a gilded golden casing, will return to Notre Dame on Friday. The event will be officiated by the archbishop of Paris and will see attendance from members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, celebrating the cathedral’s historical and cultural significance.

This revered relic has a rich history, first documented in the 5th century by pilgrims visiting Jerusalem. It later traveled to Constantinople in the 10th century before being brought to Paris in 1239 by King Louis IX of France. Recognizing its importance, Louis IX housed it in Notre Dame, later commissioning the Sainte-Chapelle specifically for its protection. It has since returned to Notre Dame, where it holds an important place in the Christian faith.

During the catastrophic fire on April 15, 2019, the Crown of Thorns was preserved in a sealed case along with other significant relics. Thanks to the swift actions of firefighters, these invaluable treasures were saved from destruction amid the chaos.

Beginning January 10, the Crown of Thorns will be available for public veneration every Friday until April 18, coinciding with the observance of Good Friday. Following this, it will be displayed on the first Friday of each month, allowing more people to pay their respects to this important religious artifact.
