Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore Join Almodóvar Film at Venice Film Festival

VENICE, Italy (AP) — Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar is making a return to the Venice Film Festival with his new movie, “The Room Next Door,” featuring stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. The film is set to have its world premiere on the Lido on Monday evening.

While any new release from Almodóvar is eagerly anticipated by movie lovers, this particular film holds special importance as it marks his debut in English-language filmmaking.

In his director’s statement, Almodóvar shared, “I found my confidence after the initial table read with the actresses, where we exchanged our first ideas.” He noted that language would not be a barrier, emphasizing that it wasn’t due to his expertise in English but rather the willingness of the entire cast to understand him and facilitate communication.

Moore and Swinton portray two friends who have drifted apart, having first met as young adults while working at a magazine. Their lives took very different directions, with Ingrid (Moore) becoming a novelist and Martha (Swinton) pursuing a career as a war correspondent. Years later, they reunite under circumstances that Sony Pictures Classics describes as “extreme but strangely sweet.”

Almodóvar last attended the Venice Film Festival in 2021 to present his film “Parallel Mothers,” which won Penelope Cruz the Best Actress award. Additionally, in 2019, he received a lifetime achievement award at Venice. His connection to the festival goes back 40 years.

Regarding his latest film, Almodóvar praised Swinton and Moore, stating, “They bear the entire weight of the film and are a true spectacle. I am fortunate that both delivered outstanding performances. During filming, both the crew and I were brought to tears at times by their work. It was a very emotional shoot and felt somewhat blessed.”

The film is competing at the 81st Venice Film Festival, alongside other notable entries like “Maria,” and the upcoming films “Queer” and “Joker: Folie à Deux.” The winners will be announced on September 7.

Sony Pictures Classics plans to release “The Room Next Door” in theaters this December.
