LONDON (AP) — The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK has received a dossier of evidence from police regarding allegations of sexual offenses involving comedian Russell Brand. Prosecutors are currently assessing whether to file charges against him.
According to a statement released late Saturday, the CPS confirmed: “We have been provided with a file by the police to evaluate potential charges in this case. Any decision to proceed will be made independently, following the evidence and adhering to our legal criteria.”
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is overseeing the investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police, stated, “Our inquiry remains ongoing, and we have now submitted the case file to the CPS. A dedicated team of officers is offering specialist support to the women who have come forward. We are fully committed to investigating sexual offenses, regardless of how long ago they occurred.”
In September 2023, allegations surfaced when British media outlets, including Channel 4 and the Sunday Times, reported claims from four women who alleged they were sexually assaulted or raped by Brand between 2006 and 2013, during a peak period in his career. The identities of the accusers have not been disclosed.
Brand, who is also known as a writer and actor in the film “Get Him To The Greek,” has publicly refuted the allegations, maintaining that all his past relationships were consensual.
The comedian, celebrated for his provocative and bold stand-up performances, has previously hosted various radio and television shows, penned memoirs detailing his struggles with addiction, appeared in numerous films, and was married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012.
Although Brand has largely stepped back from mainstream media in recent years, he has amassed a substantial following online, often sharing content that intertwines themes of wellness and conspiracy theories, demonstrating a shift in his career focus.
