New York’s Iconic Coney Island Cyclone Roller Coaster Closed Indefinitely

NEW YORK (AP) — The well-known Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster in New York City has been closed indefinitely after it unexpectedly stopped mid-ride earlier this week.

This historic wooden roller coaster, which is 97 years old, is located at Luna Park. On Thursday, as the ride was climbing, operators had to halt it due to a broken chain sprocket found in the motor room. Thankfully, all riders were safely evacuated without any injuries, as reported by New York City’s Department of Buildings.

Footage shared on social media shows a rider being carefully guided down the tracks.

On Friday, inspectors from the Department of Buildings visited the site and issued violations to Luna Park’s owners for the damaged equipment and for not reporting the incident immediately.

According to a post on Luna Park’s official website, the Cyclone will reopen once repairs are completed and the ride successfully passes inspection.

In their statement, Luna Park emphasized, “At Luna Park in Coney Island, safety is our top priority. We conduct daily maintenance and thorough testing of our rides before the park opens and throughout the day as needed.” They reassured the public that the Coney Island Cyclone is carefully maintained and tested on a daily basis.
