CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK: Celebrating the Classic and Quirky Moments

NEW YORK (AP) — Capturing the essence of Christmas in New York presents a unique challenge: there’s simply so much to photograph.

The towering Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, the ice skaters gliding across the rink in Central Park, the dazzling performances by the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall—all of these sights are beloved by tourists and showcased in countless movies and television shows.

However, for millions of New Yorkers, these iconic scenes represent everyday life rather than mere tourist attractions. Those festive department stores are where they select gifts for loved ones, and the famous rink serves as a special outing with their children after school.

In her remarkable project, Associated Press photographer Julia Nikhinson spent several weeks capturing both the cherished traditions and the lesser-known facets of the holiday season in the city. Her lens revealed heartwarming scenes, such as neighborhood carolers and an urban garden sparkling with holiday lights.

Yet, she also documented the city’s more eccentric holiday celebrations. This included everything from a holiday-themed burlesque show to a man dressed as a Christmas tree wandering the streets and a lively gathering of jolly Santas enjoying their festive drinks.

Nikhinson’s work highlighted the unique ways New Yorkers celebrate Christmas, like balancing a Christmas tree under their arm on their way home from work due to the lack of a car, which exemplifies the city’s vibrant and diverse spirit during this festive season.
