GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Olivier Rioux, recognized as the world’s tallest teenager at 7-foot-9, may delay his dreams of becoming the tallest college basketball player for another year. The talented freshman, who has earned a spot in the Guinness World Records, has opted to redshirt this season, according to Florida coach Todd Golden.
Golden noted that by not participating in any games this season, Rioux will conserve one of his four years of college eligibility. Instead of competing, he will focus on practicing and developing his skills with his teammates during the 2024-25 season, allowing him to maintain his freshman status for next fall.
“I probably should have communicated this earlier,” Golden admitted on Thursday. “It has put Olivier in a complicated position. Fans have been urging for him to play, but there was a plan in place that many didn’t fully grasp.”
Florida’s fans have shown enthusiasm for Rioux, chanting his name, “Oli,” during home games. In a recent victory against Grambling State, Golden took a moment in the closing minutes to speak to Rioux amidst the excitement on the court.
“I explained to him that my decision to keep him on the bench aligned with our discussions,” Golden reflected. “This wasn’t solely my choice but rather a collective decision involving our program, his family, and coaches to determine the best path forward for him.”
Golden reassured Rioux, saying, “I’m not trying to be disrespectful. I just don’t want to risk his eligibility for a brief appearance.” Rioux responded positively to the decision, which Golden praised, highlighting the player’s character.
“He’s a wonderful young man and genuinely wants to please others,” Golden remarked. “He’s adaptable, and as long as this approach is supported by his family and those invested in his well-being, I believe he can embrace it. Ultimately, it will be his choice, but I think this is where he will find comfort.”
