CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A team of rescuers successfully saved an 11-year-old boy who had slipped between two large boulders near his school and was trapped for more than nine hours, according to the local fire chief.
The rescue operation took place in Windsor, and the boy was finally freed around 3:15 a.m. He was taken to a hospital for a check-up but was later released, as confirmed by the Wediko School, where the boy is enrolled.
The school, which serves as a residential treatment center for boys, explained in a statement that the incident happened on Sunday evening. Under supervision, the boy was exploring a rocky area on the school grounds when he slipped and became stuck between the boulders due to shifting sticks and debris.
Despite the efforts of several staff members to free him, they were unable to do so. They quickly called for help from local emergency services. The fire chief reported that emergency responders worked diligently throughout the night and successfully rescued the boy early the next morning.
Emergency crews received the call for help shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered the boy trapped in a narrow gap between the boulders. Hillsborough Fire Chief Kenny Stafford mentioned that rescuers utilized ropes and a lubricant to carefully extract the child.
The rescue operation was a community effort, with first responders from at least five nearby towns, along with state police and the Fish and Game Department, joining forces to assist in the operation in Windsor, located in southern New Hampshire.
