Reviving the Debate: Aaron Rodgers’ Future
The last few weeks have sparked discussions among fans and commentators about whether Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets quarterback, has a viable season left in him — or potentially even more.
In a stunning display during a 32-25 victory on Sunday against Jacksonville, the 41-year-old Rodgers reminded everyone of his younger days, deftly scrambling around the field and connecting with former teammate Davante Adams.
In his most recent two games, Rodgers achieved a solid completion rate of 62%, completing 43 of 69 passes for a total of 628 yards. He threw four touchdowns and, notably, did not have a single interception.
Despite facing significant injuries earlier this season — including a torn Achilles tendon that hindered his debut — Rodgers seems to be finding his rhythm again. “I think he struggled with injuries for much of the year,” said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. “As he’s beginning to heal, we’re witnessing the real Aaron Rodgers.” This performance was closer to what Jets fans had hoped for when they traded for the star quarterback from Green Bay in April 2023.
Rodgers even showcased his mobility by rushing for 45 yards on six carries, marking one of his best running performances in his 20-year career.
“I didn’t expect him to run like that,” said left guard John Simpson, laughing. “But he’s getting out there and really enjoying himself.”
Ongoing Discussions
Debates about whether Rodgers is at the end of his career have proliferated on sports talk shows, with many speculating that they are witnessing the decline of one of the NFL’s all-time greats. However, Rodgers is making a case otherwise with his recent performances.
“After watching him regain his mobility and health over the past few weeks,” Ulbrich remarked, “there’s a part of me that believes he has at least a couple more years left to offer.”
The pivotal questions remain: Does Rodgers want to keep playing? (He has expressed uncertainty about his future.) And do the Jets envision him as part of their plans beyond this season? (This question lingers especially as the franchise seeks a new general manager and head coach.)
Contractual considerations are also on the table. Rodgers is secured through next season with a base salary of $2.5 million that is not guaranteed, in addition to a $35 million option bonus, meaning he would add $23.5 million to the salary cap. If the Jets were to cut him or if he decides to retire, they could face a $49 million dead money penalty.
Reflecting on the Season
As the Jets, currently sitting at 4-10 with the longest playoff drought in the NFL at 14 years, ponder their future, Rodgers provides them a glimpse of what may lie ahead. Reflecting on the recent victory, he stated, “It may be too little, too late, but it still feels special. This season had many moments when we were close, but we let opportunities slip away in the middle stages.”
Performance Highlights
What’s Working
The offensive line received accolades from Rodgers, who praised the performance of his five blockers — including Simpson, left tackle Olu Fashanu, center Joe Tippmann, right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, and right tackle Morgan Moses — after he finished the game completing 16 of 30 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns while getting sacked only once. “The offensive line had an outstanding game, giving me plenty of time to throw. Big shout out to the big boys,” Rodgers said.
Areas for Improvement
Clock management is an area needing attention, as Ulbrich opted to be aggressive, allowing the offense to score the go-ahead touchdown with 1:05 left, rather than running down the clock and forcing Jacksonville to use timeouts. This led to a tense finish, but ultimately Sauce Gardner sealed the game with his first interception in two years. “The way the game ended on Sunday is exactly what we have been missing,” remarked linebacker Jamien Sherwood about the defense’s performance.
Player Updates
Stock Up
Davante Adams has notably stepped up, catching nine passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars, despite a rocky start to the game that included two drops in the first half.
Stock Down
On the other hand, wide receiver Allen Lazard struggled; he had no catches and two drops, one of which could have resulted in a 30-yard touchdown. In his two games back from a chest injury, he has only managed an 18-yard reception.
Injury Reports
Ulbrich confirmed that defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is currently being assessed for a hamstring issue but is cautious about his return. “We’ll ensure that we don’t put Quinnen in harm’s way,” Ulbrich stated. Other players dealing with injuries include safety Jalen Mills (collarbone) and cornerback Michael Carter II (lower back), while cornerback D.J. Reed is sidelined with a groin injury.
Key Stats
In the last four minutes of the game, Adams recorded 135 receiving yards, marking the highest total for any player in that timeframe during a game this century, according to ESPN Research.
Looking Ahead
The Jets are set to host Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams (8-6) as they aim to achieve consecutive victories for only the second time this season.
