ROME (AP) — For the first time in two thousand years, the historic Colosseum in Rome will host gladiator battles, thanks to a $1.5 million sponsorship deal with Airbnb aimed at promoting more sustainable tourism practices.
Announced on Wednesday, the partnership will fund the renewal of an educational program within the ancient amphitheater, which will educate visitors about both the Colosseum’s rich history and the lives of gladiators.
The event will take place on May 7-8, allowing eight Airbnb users, along with their guests, to participate in simulated gladiator fights after the Colosseum closes for the day. Participants will follow the same underground passage that real gladiators once used to enter the arena. On November 27, people can apply for a chance to join this unique experience at no cost, with lucky participants selected through a lottery system.
This collaboration coincides with the release of Ridley Scott’s latest film, “Gladiators II,” which premiered in Italy on Thursday. Alfonsina Russo, the superintendent of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, described this sponsorship arrangement as part of broader efforts to secure funding for ongoing projects within the park.
Russo emphasized that this initiative is one of many partnerships designed to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the historical integrity of the Colosseum and its surroundings.
