Federal Officials Discuss Unexplained Drone Activity in New Jersey with Legislators

New Jersey lawmakers and homeland security officials held a meeting on Wednesday to address rising concerns over a series of recent drone sightings across the state. This discussion comes in light of numerous reports of unknown drone flights that began last month, particularly at night.

Residents and officials are increasingly alarmed, especially since several of the drones were first observed near the Picatinny Arsenal—a U.S. military facility—and over Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. While drones are legal for both recreational and commercial use in New Jersey, they must adhere to regulations set by local authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which includes being operated by certified operators.

Of the drones reported, most are larger than typical hobbyist models, raising additional questions about their purpose and the identities of their operators. While the frequency of sightings has surged recently, officials note that some of these may have been misidentified aircraft, and it’s possible that the same drone was reported multiple times.

New Jersey’s Governor, Phil Murphy, along with law enforcement representatives, reassured the public that these drones do not seem to pose a threat to safety. The FBI is currently investigating the incidents and is encouraging residents to provide any multimedia evidence they may have, such as videos or photographs.

In response to the escalating concerns, some local lawmakers are advocating for stricter regulations governing drone usage. At least one legislator has suggested a temporary ban on drone flights within the state.

“This is something we’re taking very seriously, and I understand why people are frustrated,” Governor Murphy expressed earlier this week. However, details from Wednesday’s meeting remain under wraps, as the Democratic governor was not present, according to his spokesperson.

Republican Assemblyman Erik Peterson, whose district has reported drone activity, shared that the meeting with Homeland Security and state police lasted about 90 minutes and was held at a state police facility in West Trenton. Peterson noted that while officials from the Department of Homeland Security were open in their discussions, they seemed to downplay some of the associated concerns, indicating that not every sighting has been verified as a drone.

With many questions still unanswered about the origins and intentions of these airborne objects, Peterson admitted, “My understanding is they have no clue.” A request for comment on his statements has been made to the Department of Homeland Security.

Reports of drone sightings have been concentrated along coastal areas, with some recent instances occurring over a large reservoir in Clinton. Nearby states, including areas in New York City and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, have also reported similar drone activity.

James Edwards from Succasunna, New Jersey, shared his experience observing drones in his neighborhood. “It raises concern mainly because there’s so much that’s unknown,” Edwards remarked. He cautioned against jumping to conclusions, adding, “We need to wait and see what is really happening here, not let fear of the unknown overtake us.”
