RANCHO MIRAGE, California (AP) — Jack Jones, renowned for his smooth crooning and for singing the theme song of the beloved television show “The Love Boat,” has passed away at the age of 86. His manager, Milt Suchin, confirmed that Jones died on Wednesday night at a California hospital after a courageous battle with leukemia that lasted over two years.
Jack Jones launched his musical career in the 1950s, swiftly gaining recognition for his talent. By the 1960s, he had won two Grammy Awards for Best Vocal Performance for his hit songs “Lollipops And Roses” and “Wives and Lovers.” His remarkable contributions to music earned him additional Grammy nominations in subsequent years, including a nod for the 1999 album “Jack Jones Paints A Tribute To Tony Bennett.”
In 1980, his iconic theme song for “The Love Boat” climbed to No. 37 on the Billboard U.S. Adult Contemporary songs chart. The show, which featured a plethora of guest stars like Gene Kelly and Janet Jackson, captured the hearts of audiences with its romantic storylines and unforgettable performances, and Jones was a frequent guest, showcasing his charm and vocal prowess.
On Thursday, a social media account for “The Ed Sullivan Show,” a classic American variety program, honored Jones by sharing fond memories of his captivating live performances. “His smooth vocals and unforgettable performances lit up our show,” they noted. “His music will continue to inspire us. Thank you for the memories, Jack. Rest in peace.”
