NEW YORK (AP) — Linkin Park has made a comeback with a new lineup, releasing their first new music since the tragic passing of lead singer Chester Bennington in 2017.
On Thursday, the band hosted a livestream event to introduce their new singer, Emily Armstrong, and drummer Colin Brittain. They join familiar faces Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix, and Joe Hahn in this refreshed version of Linkin Park, with Shinoda and Armstrong sharing vocal responsibilities.
The event kicked off with the debut of their new single, “The Emptiness Machine.” Armstrong’s singing style honors the band’s legacy, delivering powerful vocals reminiscent of Bennington, as evident in the second song performed, “Somewhere I Belong.”
“This is a very special day for us,” Shinoda declared while introducing the new lineup, also noting that guitarist Alex Feder was stepping in for Delson for the event. He remarked, “In the role of Chester Bennington today is each one of you,” as he addressed the audience.
Linkin Park also revealed their upcoming album titled “From Zero,” which is set for release on November 15.
The rock-rap band has been one of the most successful musical acts of the 2000s, thanks in large part to Bennington’s powerful vocals. He tragically passed away at the age of 41 after the release of their last album, “One More Light.” Since then, the band has released several reissues, including 20th-anniversary editions of “Hybrid Theory” and “Meteora,” along with a greatest hits compilation this year called “Papercuts.”
“Before we were Linkin Park, we were called Xero. The title of this new album reflects both our humble beginnings and the journey we are on now,” Shinoda explained in a statement about the album.
Emily Armstrong comes from the alternative rock band Dead Sara, while Brittain is a songwriter and producer known for his work with groups like Papa Roach, One OK Rock, and All Time Low. He replaces original drummer Rob Bourdon, who has decided to take a step back from the band, according to a representative.
“As we worked more with Emily and Colin, we grew to appreciate their incredible talents and the chemistry we developed together,” Shinoda shared. “We feel really empowered by this new lineup and are excited about the vibrant new music we’ve been creating. We’re combining the classic sounds we’re known for while also exploring new directions.”
The band also announced their “From Zero World Tour,” featuring five arena shows this month in major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Hamburg, Germany, London, and Seoul, with a sixth show planned for November in Bogotá, Colombia.
