Lionel Messi Claims MLS MVP Award, Adding Another Honor to His Impressive Resume with Inter Miami

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — In a surprising twist, Lionel Messi found himself on the soccer field, unsure of what was unfolding around him. Over 250 young players from the Inter Miami academy gathered in the midfield, lined up in a formation that spelled out ‘MVP’. It was only when Messi noticed his children among the crowd, proudly holding a trophy, that he realized he had been named Major League Soccer’s most valuable player for the year 2024.

Despite a challenging season where he sat out 15 of Inter Miami’s 34 regular matches due to injuries and national team duties, Messi emerged as the MLS MVP. He contributed to a league-high 36 goals, scoring 20 and assisting on 16, showcasing the highest goal rate per 90 minutes in MLS history.

“It’s an honor for me to be recognized with this award by all of you,” Messi expressed to the academy players during the unexpected MVP presentation at Inter Miami’s stadium on Wednesday night.

MLS released the voting results on Friday, revealing that Messi narrowly surpassed Columbus Crew forward Cucho Hernández for the prestigious award, which is determined through a poll involving players, club technical staff, and select media members. Although club voters leaned slightly towards Hernández, Messi was favored by 41% of the players and 43% of the media.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber, present at the event, remarked on Messi’s immense global appeal, “Unless you live in the world of global football, it’s challenging to grasp the widespread popularity and stardom that Leo Messi commands. He is like a combination of Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift — and he’s playing in our league.”

In the voting breakdown, Messi garnered 38.4% of the average vote, while Hernández received 33.7%. Rounding out the top five were Portland Timbers midfielder Evander (9.2%), D.C. United’s Christian Benteke (7.1%), and Messi’s teammate at Inter Miami, Luis Suárez (2.2%).

Messi’s recognition capped off a remarkable 2024 season in which he led Inter Miami to the Supporters Shield and achieved a record for the best regular-season performance in MLS history, as well as captaining Argentina to a Copa America title. Unfortunately, Inter Miami’s journey ended early in the MLS Cup playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round.

Reflecting on the season, Messi stated, “I would have preferred to accept this award under different circumstances, ideally while competing in the (MLS Cup) final next Saturday. However, football teaches us to overcome challenges every day. We aspired to be MLS champions this year, but it didn’t pan out. Next year, we’ll return stronger and more determined.”

Named after the legendary Landon Donovan, the MLS MVP award adds to Messi’s already astounding collection of accolades. Among his numerous honors are eight Ballon d’Or titles, eight FIFA Player of the Year awards, seven Spanish league MVP awards, and many more, making a compelling case for his status as the greatest player of all time.

During the trophy ceremony, some academy players had the opportunity to speak to Messi directly, sharing their admiration. “Hi Leo, you are my MVP because you’ve been my idol since childhood. It’s amazing to see you here in person every day,” said Victor Fung, an U-19 Inter Miami player. “Thank you for all the unforgettable memories and everything you’ve done for us.”

When Messi decided to join Inter Miami last year, it sent shockwaves through the soccer world and transformed the franchise into a powerhouse brand. Shortly after his arrival, the team clinched the Leagues Cup, marking their first trophy. Additionally, Messi’s No. 10 jersey quickly became the best-selling in MLS history.

Garber added, “I must say it has exceeded my expectations. I love what Messi’s presence has done for MLS and hope he remains healthy and continues to play in the league for a long time.” Currently, Messi is under contract until the end of the 2025 season, and Inter Miami has expressed a desire for him to extend his stay through at least 2026, coinciding with their plans for a new stadium near Miami International Airport.

“I would love to see Leo be part of our league indefinitely,” Garber continued. “I spoke to his wife and greeted his children on Wednesday night, and they seem very happy here, which is wonderful. Seeing a player and their family content is what it’s all about.”

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas was questioned this week about the club’s significant investment in Messi, which includes a contract valued at a minimum of $150 million, along with an annual salary that surpasses the payroll of several entire teams. His response was succinct yet telling: “Just one word—amazing. And there’s more to come.”
