<p>LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mariah Carey announced on Monday that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day.</p>
<p>“I am heartbroken to share that I lost my mother this past weekend. Tragically, my sister also lost her life on the same day,” Carey, a Grammy Award-winning artist, expressed in a statement.</p>
<p>“I feel fortunate to have spent the last week with my mom before her passing,” the statement continued. “I am grateful for everyone’s love and support, and I kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time.”</p>
<p>The <span class="LinkEnhancement"><a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://www.timesunion.com/hudsonvalley/news/article/alison-carey-mariah-sister-died-19724159.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Times Union</a></span> reported that Alison, who had been mostly estranged from Carey, died at the age of 63 after experiencing complications with her organ function while in hospice care.</p>
<p><span class="LinkEnhancement"><a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://people.com/mariah-carey-mom-patricia-sister-alison-both-died-same-day-exclusive-8701561" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People Magazine</a></span> was the first to report the news of their deaths and Carey's statement.</p>
<p>Patricia was an opera singer trained at Juilliard, and Carey said she was a significant inspiration for her throughout her childhood.</p>
<p>“I would sing little tunes around the house to the delight of my mother, who always encouraged me,” Carey recalled in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”</p>
<p>Patricia was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah's father. The couple divorced when Mariah was just three years old. Carey was raised in Suffolk County on Long Island, primarily living with her mother after the divorce. Her father passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.</p>

<p>In her memoir, Carey opened up about her complex relationships with her mother and sister, noting that she and Patricia often had conflicts that led her to experience “pain and confusion.” She also described situations where she felt unsafe because of her sister.</p>
<p>“My journey with my mother has been filled with contradictions and a mix of emotions,” Carey wrote. “Our relationship involves pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment — a complicated love links my heart to my mother.”</p>
