In an exciting development for fans of the adorable pygmy hippo Moo Deng from Thailand, an official song titled “Moodeng Moodeng” has been released, celebrating this beloved baby animal. To cater to her international audience, the 50-second upbeat tune is available in four languages: Thai, English, Chinese, and Japanese. The lyrics are simple and catchy, featuring lines like “Moo Deng Moo Deng, boing boing boing / Mommy mommy, play with me.” Accompanying this catchy tune is a delightful music video showcasing Moo Deng bouncing around, playing with her keeper, and enjoying time with her mother, Jona.
The song was crafted by renowned Thai composer Mueanphet Ammara and is released under GMM Music, one of Thailand’s leading music companies. This catchy tune has contributed to the global phenomenon of Moo Deng, who captured hearts shortly after being introduced on Facebook by Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri province.
Fans have noted that Moo Deng’s name humorously reflects her spirited nature. The term “Moo Deng” translates to “bouncy pork” in Thai, akin to a type of meatball, and her energetic bouncing has made her a sensation online, inspiring countless memes and even endorsements from sports teams and businesses.
At just four months old, Moo Deng has become a significant draw for visitors to the zoo, located a two-hour drive from Bangkok. The attraction has experienced an influx of visitors, averaging 3,000 to 5,000 per day recently. Moreover, the zoo has been capitalizing on Moo Deng’s popularity by selling themed merchandise, including clothing and bedding.
The zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoi, highlighted that the revenue generated from Moo Deng’s fame will bolster conservation efforts for many endangered species, including the pygmy hippopotamus, whose population is threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Native to West Africa, there are only an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 pygmy hippos remaining in the wild today.
Situated on 800 hectares (nearly 2,000 acres), the zoo is home to over 2,000 animals and is committed to conservation and education efforts through its programs.
All four versions of the “Moodeng Moodeng” song are available for streaming on YouTube and various platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, making it easy for fans worldwide to enjoy the infectious charm of Moo Deng.
