BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — Jabrill Peppers, who serves as a captain for the Patriots, was arrested over the weekend following serious allegations, including assault and strangulation. According to police reports, the incident unfolded after Peppers became aggressive towards his girlfriend when she received a phone call while they were in bed together.
On Monday, Peppers, age 29, appeared in Quincy District Court for his arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to several charges, which encompass assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, along with possession of a Class “B” substance believed to be cocaine, as detailed in court documents.
Police responded to a call early Saturday morning regarding a dispute at a residential home. The reports indicate that Peppers physically assaulted the woman by pushing her to the ground, forcibly slamming her head against a wall, and choking her. The victim stated to law enforcement that she was choked at least six times and was ultimately forced out of the house. Although she sustained injuries, she declined to go to a hospital, opting for treatment at the residence instead.
When the police arrived, Peppers answered the door without a shirt and acknowledged the situation by stating, “I know what is going on.” He was taken into custody without resistance. During their search, officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, which later tested positive for cocaine.
Following his arrest, Peppers posted bail set at $2,500. His next court appearance is slated for November 22, although he has been permitted to waive his presence in court.
During the court proceedings, Peppers’ attorney, Marc Brofsky, claimed that evidence exists which casts significant doubt on the accusations against him, including video footage from the incident. He also indicated that Peppers had agreed to avoid any contact with the woman involved.
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo addressed reporters on Monday, stating that the team is currently gathering more information about Peppers’ arrest. He noted that, for the time being, Peppers is still allowed access to the Patriots’ facilities. “We don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building,” Mayo commented, noting that the organization was informed of Peppers’ arrest the very morning it occurred.
The team has initiated discussions regarding the situation, which is particularly relevant given the presence of multiple captains on the offense and defense. Mayo emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “players need to know about it, and so we can learn from whatever happened.” He also mentioned that further insights regarding any potential actions by the NFL should be expected in the coming days.
Peppers, who is currently in his third season with the Patriots, had signed an extension with the team over the summer. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2017 and played for them for two seasons before spending three seasons with the New York Giants. Notably, Peppers is dealing with a shoulder injury and did not participate in the Patriots’ most recent game, where they suffered a 15-10 defeat against the Miami Dolphins.
