ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has announced that Carlo Acutis will be canonized next April, marking the date for the late teenager to become the first saint of the millennial and digital age within the Catholic Church. This long-awaited moment is set to take place during the Jubilee of Adolescents at the Vatican from April 25-27, with the canonization Mass scheduled for April 27.
Born in London to Italian parents, Acutis was adept in technology and worked as a web designer. Tragically, he passed away from leukemia in Italy at just 15 years old in 2006. His tomb in Assisi, where he was beatified by Francis in 2020, has become a popular destination for pilgrims.
Recognized as the “patron saint of the internet,” Acutis utilized his tech skills to create a website that documents miracles and managed websites for local Catholic entities. In May, Pope Francis confirmed a second miracle attributed to Acutis’ intercession, allowing for this significant announcement.
The pope shared this news at the conclusion of his weekly general audience on Wednesday, highlighting the contemporary relevance and inspirational legacy of Carlo Acutis for today’s youth.
