NEW YORK (AP) — Reuters announced on Tuesday that Sally Buzbee, the former executive editor of The Associated Press and The Washington Post, will be stepping into the role of top editor for the United States and Canada.
Buzbee, who has extensive experience in journalism, is set to succeed Kieran Murray in this position. Murray will transition to oversee Reuters’ live events business, marking a significant shift in leadership within the agency.
Before her recent appointment, Buzbee left The Washington Post in June due to disagreements with the new publisher, Will Lewis, about a restructuring plan that would have demoted her. This decision followed a commendable career where she led the global newsroom at The Associated Press from 2017 until 2021 before moving to The Post.
At 59 years old, Buzbee brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role. “Her journalistic chops, her management experience, her global understanding and her positive and pragmatic approach are just what we need in this time of upheaval for the world and for the news industry,” noted Alessandra Galloni, Editor-in-Chief of Reuters.
Reuters is currently expanding its consumer outreach with new initiatives such as a subscription-based website, newsletters, and podcasts. It operates as part of Thomson Reuters, a company based in Toronto, and is keen on enhancing its presence in the evolving media landscape.
