GM Expands Recall to Over 132,000 Heavy-Duty Pickups Due to Risk of Unexpected Tailgate Openings

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is expanding a recall to include more than 132,000 heavy-duty pickups in the United States due to a potential issue with tailgate release switches that may short circuit, leading to unintended opening of the gates while the trucks are parked.

This recall now encompasses certain models from the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 series, building upon a previous recall issued in February that initially affected 323,000 heavy-duty trucks. The problem specifically affects vehicles equipped with a manual tailgate that also has power lock and release features.

According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, water intrusion into the electronic gate release switches can cause the tailgates to unlatch unexpectedly. This can result in cargo spilling onto the roadway, posing a serious safety hazard for both the driver and other road users.

The decision to enhance the recall comes after GM received 237 reports from the field regarding incidents of tailgates opening without warning. Until the necessary repairs are conducted, GM advises truck owners to confirm that their tailgates are properly closed and latched before setting off on any drive.

To remedy this situation, dealership technicians will replace the current exterior touch pad switch assemblies with upgraded versions designed to be more resistant to water exposure.

Notifications to affected owners will begin on January 13, ensuring they are informed about the recall and the steps required to address this issue.
